Garari Tree (Hindi name) or Cleistanthus collinus (botanical name) is a tree known to a very few people. I am not saying that it is obligatory for you to know about this tree but, if you are a farmer, having information about this tree will certainly help.

The trick that I am going to show you today, is widely used in my region.

The Garari tree has some serious agricultural benefits. It grows mostly in South India.

The Garari tree has personally saved me a fortune and that too a lot of times. I mostly grow rice in my farm and use of this tree works like magic for the health of my crop.

So, What is Garari Tree exactly and How does it help in agriculture?

Well, the Garari tree contains a poison, which is a natural pesticide. Leaves of this tree are widely used as a mulch in my region while growing a crop.

While growing rice, we put these leaves in the mud when we prepare the land for rice cultivation.

This technique is a proven technique and I have got some excellent results using it. The poison not only keeps the pests away but also increases the immunity of the crop.

Science says that this tree contains toxic ingredients like diphyllin and its glycoside derivatives cleistanthin A, cleistanthin B; and collinusin.

Cleistanthin A and Cleistanthin B are the chemicals responsible for the good results in agriculture. The whole tree contains these chemicals and it can be used as a pesticide while preparing the land for cultivation.

Many times, I have seen people using equipment made up using the bark of this tree. Especially, equipment made from the bark of this tree is used while preparing the land for rice cultivation. As this equipment moves around, the poison gets spread across the field.

Many people in my region use this equipment and also use the leaves of this tree together to get even better results. You can see in the pictures that the rice grown near the tree looks as healthy as it can be.

To identify the tree, the below image shows how the leaves of this tree look.

  • Well, one thing should be kept in mind at all times, excessive use of anything is harmful. Here also, if we make excessive use of this tree, then it can start affecting the crop also. Therefore, the controlled use of this tree should be made.
  • Many cases have also been found where this tree has affected human health when consumed directly. So, we should be cautious.

In earlier days, I used to go for this technique whenever I was low on budget. However, after seeing such good results, I have started using it every time I prepare the land for cultivation. This saves me money and yields excellent results.

I would encourage you guys to go ahead and experiment with the Garari tree in your farms.

This is not a new technique that I am sharing. In fact, this is a very old technique and a natural way or an organic way to take care of your farm. Well, I guess what people say is right- Old is Gold.

You will have to search it in the nearby villages. It is poisonous, so I don’t think nurseries will sell that.
